There’s a particular calm that comes from living with things that are made well. Not flashy. Not fragile. Just thoughtful pieces that quietly do their job, day after day, year after year.
If you’ve ever wondered what’s actually worth investing in at home, Dave Martin’s perspective feels grounding.
Dave has spent his career designing and building homes meant to last. Homes that support real life as it unfolds. The everyday routines, the moments of pause, the years that pass without much fanfare. His approach isn’t about perfection or excess, but about ease, intention, and choosing materials that age with grace.
It’s exactly why his way of thinking feels so aligned with Eva.
We sat down with Dave to talk about what living well really looks like at home, how to think about sustainability without feeling overwhelmed, and the everyday pieces he’s chosen for his own space.
You’ve spent your career building homes that are designed to last. What does “living well” actually look like to you at home?
Living well, for us, is about ease and intention. A home should support daily life without asking too much of you, spaces that feel calm, materials that age gracefully, and environments that encourage connection rather than distraction. It’s not about excess or perfection. It’s about creating a place that feels grounded, generous, and genuinely comfortable to live in over many years.
Sustainability gets talked about a lot, but it can feel overwhelming. Where do you think people can make the biggest difference without overhauling their entire life?
Longevity is the quiet lever that often gets overlooked. Choosing fewer things, but choosing them well, homes, furniture, materials, has an outsized impact over time. If something is well made, repairable, and loved enough to keep, that’s already a meaningful sustainability decision. You don’t need to do everything at once. Small, considered choices compound.
You work with buildings every day. How has that changed the way you think about the furniture you choose for your own home?
Working in construction gives you a deep respect for craftsmanship and materials. You start to notice how things are made, how they’re put together, and whether they’re designed to endure real life. Furniture becomes less about trends and more about honesty, solid materials, thoughtful detailing, and a sense that it will still feel right in ten or twenty years.
What made you choose Eva’s Timber Bed Frame, and what mattered most in that decision?
We were drawn to the simplicity and clarity of the design, but equally to the values behind the pieces. Solid timber, restrained forms, and a focus on durability mattered most. These are everyday objects, the bed you rest in, the table you gather around, so comfort, quality, and longevity were non-negotiable. They feel purposeful rather than precious, which is exactly how we like to live.
You design for the long term. How do you decide what’s worth investing in, and what’s okay to keep simple?
We invest in the elements that are touched every day and form the backbone of how a home functions, structure, light, thermal performance, and key pieces of furniture. Other things can remain flexible. If the foundations are right, the home can evolve naturally over time without losing its integrity.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone building or furnishing a home with the future in mind, what would it be?
Slow down and think beyond the moment. Ask how something will feel to live with, not just how it looks today. Homes, and the things within them, should support a life unfolding, not a snapshot in time. If you design with care, restraint, and longevity in mind, the future tends to take care of itself.
Dave’s approach to design is refreshingly simple. Choose fewer things. Choose them well. Let them age alongside you.
It’s a way of thinking about home that feels grounded and generous. One where comfort, care and longevity matter more than trends.
And over time, that kind of thinking quietly shapes the way you live.
