Design Notes: Behind the Timber Bed Frame

Flatpack furniture has never had the best reputation. Wobbly, squeaky, and always too many screws. If you have ever spent hours wrestling with an Allen key only to end up with a bed that creaks on the first night, you will know the frustration.

The Timber Bed Frame was designed to change that. A bed that is simple to put together, solid in construction, and beautiful enough to stay with you for years. It even won a Good Design Award, proving that the humble flatpack could be reimagined.

Starting With a Problem

Our designer Tom explains: “We wanted to create a high-quality, beautifully simple bed frame that was easy to assemble. The goal was to make something that would truly stand the test of time.”

Flatpack should not be a hassle. It should feel effortless. Imagine setting up your bed in minutes, sliding under the covers, and hearing nothing but quiet.

Why Tool-Free Assembly

“No tools” was at the heart of the design. Tom recalls: “Very early on we decided that no-tool assembly would be one of Eva’s core USPs. We wanted to challenge the perception that flatpack furniture is cheap, flimsy, and frustrating to put together. Our goal was to give people a new kind of experience, something simple, solid, and enjoyable, without the dreaded Allen key.”

That is why the Timber Bed Frame clicks together smoothly and locks in place. It is the kind of assembly you can do with a cup of tea nearby, knowing it will be sturdy by the time you are ready for bed.

Building Strength

The beauty of Timber is in how it feels once it is built. Strong, grounded, and quiet.

Tom shares: “To keep the construction solid, we used premium materials and traditional joinery techniques often found in high-end furniture. We use a combination of birch plywood and American oak. The birch is cross-laminated, making it incredibly strong, while the oak adds warmth and timeless appeal. The squeak-free quality comes from joints that lock tightly into place, and slats that sit within their own pockets, allowing subtle movement without friction.”

It is the kind of detail you notice not on day one, but on day one hundred. When the frame still feels sturdy. When your mornings stay calm because the bed does not creak awake before you do.

Designer’s Favourite Detail

For Tom, the joy is in the details. “I always talk about paddle pop slats. At first glance, people assume it’s just a design aesthetic, but really it’s about efficiency. The shape was designed to make the cutting process more streamlined. It is a small detail, but one that reflects the thoughtfulness behind the whole design.”

Those paddle pop slats make the frame lighter, more efficient, and just as strong. For you, it means less fuss and more reliability every night.

Choosing Better

When asked why not just settle for a cheaper frame, Tom does not hesitate: “Don’t do it. You might save money upfront, but in the long run you will regret it.”

We have all seen it happen. A bed that creaks after a few weeks. A leg that wobbles after the first move. A frame that ends up on the kerb before the year is out.

Timber was designed to be the opposite of that cycle. It is solid enough to survive every house move. Quiet enough that it never interrupts your sleep. Considered enough to feel timeless in any room.

That is why it won a Good Design Award. And it is why Timber is still one of our most loved designs today. Because when you choose better, you are not just buying a frame. You are investing in mornings without squeaks, nights without frustration, and years of dependable rest.

Designed by a B Corp

Every decision behind Timber reflects something bigger. Eva is proudly B Corp certified, which means we meet some of the highest standards for social and environmental impact. From FSC-certified timber to low-waste joinery, Timber was made to respect both your home and the planet.

It is a bed that lasts, not one that ends up on the kerb in a year’s time.

The Timber Bed Frame is proof that flatpack can be reimagined. It is strong, simple, award-winning, and designed to last. As Tom says, it was made to stand the test of time.
